Book 68: My Soul to Take

9 May

my soul to takeMy Soul to Take (Soul Screamers #1) by Rachel Vincent

I was very much in a Teen Wolf mood, and I found this book ages ago and added it to my kindle.  This is my first banshee story(yay for Lydia) and I thought it was pretty good.  Unfortunately I don’t have the money to buy the rest of the series (there are 10 other books out there!) so it might be awhile before I finish the whole thing.

Quotes:

“I was tired of being left in the dark. “Can they read my thoughts or see through my clothes?” -Yes, girl do not hang out with pervy reapers.

“but the dead have a way of becoming saints in the eyes of their survivors,”

“Wait, Saturday night?” The ladder-backed chair creaked and I looked up as he leaned forward to eye me in growing suspicion. “I thought you stayed home.”
I shrugged and raised one eyebrow at him. “I thought I was human.” – Best comeback in the story.

“Rumor has it you’ve conquered more territory than Genghis Khan.”

“No, I didn’t want to be the latest on his rumored list of conquests, but I wouldn’t mind knowing I was worthy.”

Book 65: She’s No Faerie Princess

15 Mar

she's no faerie princessShe’s No Faerie Princess (Novels of the Others #10) by Christine Warren

This book was awesome.  I’ve been on a YA wave lately, so I was getting an urging for a good romance novel.  And this book surely delivered.  It had a Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld vibe, so of course I enjoyed it.  It combined the supernatural and romance in a way that was easy to read. (I was too eager to read it, as I was caught reading during working hours. woops) And it only took 34 pages before the characters acted on their lust.  Either I’ve been away from these too books too long, or those scenes are coming faster that I remember. haha. But having this little peak into the world, I look forward to reading the other books in the series.  Unfortunately that might be awhile.   As I will talk about in a future post, I’ve made the switch to the kindle, to satisfy my reading needs, but still being poor only buy the free books, or on sale books. I took a trip to the English bookstore in Seoul a couple weeks ago, and got this on sale, a real paper in your hands book, but the ebooks of the series are still too pricey for me. 😦 But I’ll get to them eventually!

Quote

“It wasn’t her fault that every time they touched, magic just happened.” (117) AHHHHHH. the chemistry.

Her voice stayed serene and quiet, but no one could mistake the steel in it. (169) This is what I aspire to.  Most people who know me would describe me as quiet and/or serene, but I can’t pull the steel/don’t question me quite yet.

Book 63: Enchanted

8 Mar

EnchantedEnchanted ( Woodcutter Sisters #1) by Alethea Kontis

I loved this book.  Which goes to show sometimes you can trust the internet.  I found this on buzzfeed, which suggested books based on tv shows that you like.  As Once Upon a Time is one of my favorites, I decided to try their suggestion.  The writing was easy to read along with, with a good flow that I didn’t even realize how caught up in the story I was.  I felt like Sunday’s family was very homey and good, but not unrealistic (save for the magic they have).  And as I too get along with my siblings, although I don’t have as many as she does, I appreciated the importance of their relationships.  I was pleased by how they tied in all the well known fairy tails, into this one family and story.  This had just the right amount of romance (which didn’t feel forced) unlike the past few books I’ve read, to compliment the story’s fairy tails.

Now to characters, and how much I liked them. Monday didn’t really wasn’t in it for long, but  she had one of the most poignant comebacks about how one night/meeting is not enough to base a marriage on. *snaps to you girl. you tell Rumbold  Next we have Tuesday, who died.  Wednesday, the most fey, she was cool, so I look forward to what she will do.   My favorite was Thursday, mostly because she seems to have premonitions and she’s a Pirate. Then Friday, the kind one.  Saturday the tomboyish one was interesting and the next book is about her, yay!

Quotes:

“If you did not indulge in fantasies, how else would you know if you were living an interesting life?”- Sadly I prefer to live in my fantasy worlds.

“The curse of an interesting life: there are either very good times or very bad times.” – But these are what make interesting stories.

“It can’t be ‘true’ love without truth,” -Preach

“Love, despair, anger, or insanity.” Erik counted them off on his fingers. “Everything to lose, nothing to lose, someone’s taken it, or you’ve lost it.”

“If you want anything to work, Sunday, you’re going to have to believe it.”-Preach Part 2

“She saw no harm in letting a handsome, powerful man adore her for a while.”- The dream sister

“Her sister?” Erik asked. “Weekday or weekend?”- When I read this I laughed out loud, and had to spend a few minutes explaining to my friends why I was acting crazy.

Book 62: The Paper Magician

4 Mar

the paper magicianThe Paper Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy #1 ) by Charlie N. Holmberg

This has been on my to-read list since I don’t know.  Again, I loved the magic aspects of this book, the schooling, the bonding process, the creativity of using the magics but the romance bothered me.  Ceony falls in love with Emery.  Yes she did take a journey through his heart, seeing his hopes and dreams and doubts, but I don’t know it felt forced to me.   It was an obvious choice for the book to make, which I usually enjoy that’s the whole Romance Section of books that I read, but it didn’t fit, maybe it’s the teacher-student thing but I just felt weird about it.  Other than that the book was good.   Lots of action, magic, good pacing.  The magic was pretty cool, we hinted at the other types but the usage of paper and blood magic was sick.  The paper magic reminded me of one of my favorite animes Read Or Die, where the characters were paper manipulators.  And the blood magic, man was amazing, damn you Lira and your cool tricks.   Since it is a trilogy, I hope there is more cool magic to be explored.

Quotes:

“The ghostly images lasted only a moment longer before fading away, as all unread stories were wont to do.” I would totes get this temporarily tattooed on my persona.

P.S. I know we’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but look at this beauty. Hot Damn.

Book 58: Broken

21 Jul

brokenBroken (Women of the Otherworld # 6) by Kelley Armstrong

In the sixth installment we jump back to Elena and Clay. And She’s preggers!! So cute. One of the things I love about this world, is all the cross appearances of characters. Here we get Jaime, coming to help with her necro powers, and to you know oogle Jeremy. And some introductions to Zoe, haha her hitting, repeatedly, on pregnant Elena priceless. The story was interesting, but as always the girls gotta save the day. Whoop go Jaime, controlling the bad zombies, and Elena being well Elena.

Otherworld Mania!

19 Jul

Fluffies,

Okay this is my kick off post for my Kelley Armstrong reading madness. I wanted to read all the other Armstrong novels before I became too busy/engrossed/dying from heat. I thought well I’ve already read 5/ 13 books it shouldn’t be too hard to finish, but then I discovered she wrote a bunch of novellas. If you check out this link it has all the stories in the Otherworld Universe, and I made a nice little document to check what I’ve read (a measely 5/51!) Unfortunately I’m under limited funds, so I could only grab her printed works from the holy library.

Book 57: The Iron Knight

16 Jul

theironknightThe Iron Knight (The Iron Fey #4) by Julia Kagawa

I loved this not as much as I loved the Iron Queen, but more than the first two books. I get to hang out with Ash, one of my favorite broody boy characters. We leave off from Meghan kicking him out of her realm (in the name of love no less), and there he is, trying to find his way back to her. swoon* Of course he has to have his trusty best friend/arch nemesis, Puck, along for the ride. Lots of cute banter moments. Add in Grim, the cat, and the big bad Wolf and we’re almost complete. But there seems to be some romantic drama lacking so let’s bring Ariella back from the dead, oh you know the first girl Ash loved. She was good, I didn’t dislike her, even though I thouroughly ship Ash/Meghan. Now our gaming party is complete to seek a way for Ash to gain a soul and make his way to Meghan. My favorite scene had to be when Ash, and Meghan are by the pond. She just found out that Ash is back with Ariella, and OMG my heart was just breaking when she gives him up, again. I won’t lie, I teared up a little when she said, “What we had was a dream and it was beautiufl, but it was just a dream. It’s time for us to wake up.” And as heartbreaking as that line was my favorite line had to be, “I cam home.” Oh Ash. *sigh
