Book 68: My Soul to Take

9 May

my soul to takeMy Soul to Take (Soul Screamers #1) by Rachel Vincent

I was very much in a Teen Wolf mood, and I found this book ages ago and added it to my kindle.  This is my first banshee story(yay for Lydia) and I thought it was pretty good.  Unfortunately I don’t have the money to buy the rest of the series (there are 10 other books out there!) so it might be awhile before I finish the whole thing.

“I was tired of being left in the dark. “Can they read my thoughts or see through my clothes?” -Yes, girl do not hang out with pervy reapers.

“but the dead have a way of becoming saints in the eyes of their survivors,”

“Wait, Saturday night?” The ladder-backed chair creaked and I looked up as he leaned forward to eye me in growing suspicion. “I thought you stayed home.”
I shrugged and raised one eyebrow at him. “I thought I was human.” – Best comeback in the story.

“Rumor has it you’ve conquered more territory than Genghis Khan.”

“No, I didn’t want to be the latest on his rumored list of conquests, but I wouldn’t mind knowing I was worthy.”

Book 65: She’s No Faerie Princess

she's no faerie princessShe’s No Faerie Princess (Novels of the Others #10) by Christine Warren

This book was awesome.  I’ve been on a YA wave lately, so I was getting an urging for a good romance novel.  And this book surely delivered.  It had a Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld vibe, so of course I enjoyed it.  It combined the supernatural and romance in a way that was easy to read. (I was too eager to read it, as I was caught reading during working hours. woops) And it only took 34 pages before the characters acted on their lust.  Either I’ve been away from these too books too long, or those scenes are coming faster that I remember. haha. But having this little peak into the world, I look forward to reading the other books in the series.  Unfortunately that might be awhile.   As I will talk about in a future post, I’ve made the switch to the kindle, to satisfy my reading needs, but still being poor only buy the free books, or on sale books. I took a trip to the English bookstore in Seoul a couple weeks ago, and got this on sale, a real paper in your hands book, but the ebooks of the series are still too pricey for me. 😦 But I’ll get to them eventually!

“It wasn’t her fault that every time they touched, magic just happened.” (117) AHHHHHH. the chemistry.

Her voice stayed serene and quiet, but no one could mistake the steel in it. (169) This is what I aspire to.  Most people who know me would describe me as quiet and/or serene, but I can’t pull the steel/don’t question me quite yet.

Otherworld Mania!

19 Jul

Okay this is my kick off post for my Kelley Armstrong reading madness. I wanted to read all the other Armstrong novels before I became too busy/engrossed/dying from heat. I thought well I’ve already read 5/ 13 books it shouldn’t be too hard to finish, but then I discovered she wrote a bunch of novellas. If you check out this link it has all the stories in the Otherworld Universe, and I made a nice little document to check what I’ve read (a measely 5/51!) Unfortunately I’m under limited funds, so I could only grab her printed works from the holy library.

Book 46: The Rising

1 Jun

therisingThe Rising (Darkness Rising #3) by Kelley Armstrong

Here I was waiting patiently for the conclusion of the trilogy and after reading it I just felt meh. Which probably has to do with the Daniel/Maya ending. I just loved Rafe so much. But I can see that the kids made the right decision by making a deal with the Cabal, and it is basically learning super soldier training that you can later use to escape. What I loved about this book was the A) mentions of Women of the Otherworld characters (Savannah in the house whoop) and B) when they joined up with the Genesis kids! I definitely preferred that trilogy/cast of characters. Man what does it say about me, when my favorite character(Chloe) is only in less than 50 pages of the 400. She just has the best lines!

Book 38: The Diviners

thedivinersThe Diviners by Libba Bray

This review comes from my adventures in book samples. Thank you to my lovely friends at Comic-con for giving me (and countless others) a lovely preview into the novel. Without which I probably would not have read unless greatly recommended by a close and personal friend(or internet stranger) But yes supernatural activity, ragtag group of teens, roaring 20s, and *sigh a museum. First off I loved all the lingo. “And how. Pie-face. Jake. being goofy for your crush” classic.  Man Libba Bray was really able to draw me into the time period.   Second I liked how all the characters seemed to resonate with the novel, how everyone had a part to play (that sounds kind of dumb, but ya’ll get what I mean right?) , oh Miss Emma Snow said it in her review “Every single one had a significant importance throughout the novel. They each held a piece to the story, giving Evie the opportunity to unravel the mystery of Naughty John – the murderer,” check out the rest of her review  here.  What I didn’t like was the love tangles. Come on, I mean I know it wasn’t a main focus of the story but it still bothered me a weensy bit. But what I liked most was all the different powers (some explained some not) in the story. My favorite character was Sam. Dang it heart why do you make me love all the stupid charming characters. I definitely have a type. Haha. But his innuendos were so funny! Last but not least the title fits the book/superpowered teens perfectly. Diviners Why does 2014(when the sequel comes out) seem so far away?

Book 20: Dime Store Magic

4 Feb

Dime_Store_MagicDime Store Magic (Women of the Otherworld #3) By Kelley Armstrong

I loved loved loved it. We step out of the wolf world into the world of spells and magic. Paige is certainly a change from the force of nature Elena, but is strong in her own cutesy way. Paige and Savannah’s mother-daughter-sister relationship was beautifully written. Savannah’s teeny-bopper attitude paired with her powerful magic, makes her a force to be reckon with, she definitely is not making motherhood easy for the twenty-three year old witch. Lucas Cortez, sorcerer lawyer, riding to save the day, a knight not on a white steed but wicked cool motorcycle. I find their sorcerer/witch dynamic very interesting, and it makes for a good love story. Their ability to recognize each other kinda seems like a mating instinct, roaring “him him, with him you can make super magical babies,” well except for the whole we hate each others’ race thang. I hope that Paige can create another coven, and am interested how the Cortez Cabal will figure into the future of Lucas and Paige. Can their be any mix to the Cabal and Coven hierarchy. We shall see. I am very excited to read the next book, Industrial Magic.

Book 17/18 Beautiful Chaos & Beautiful Redemption

26 Jan

beautifulchaosBeautiful RedemptionBeautiful Chaos & Beautiful Redemption by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

I absolutely positively loved these two books! Although these are two different books, I consider them a two part-er, like all those books turned movies separating into parts, i.e. Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2, or The Hobbit Part 1,2, and 3. Liv and John, Ridley and Link, Ethan and Lena. So much love and drama!! One of my favorite scenes was from Beautiful Chaos, when Ridley “casts” the fury(furor) spell. Well that is quite a way for Liv and Lena to work through their issues. Reminded me of the scene in Beautiful Creatures when Lena yells/casts at Ridley during dinner, which looks epic in the movie trailer! And as opposed to my previous post, about my favorite character Marian, I have to change it to the younger Olivia “Liv” Durand. She’s a mini Marian, with a little more of the fire I like to envision that I would have. She also you know, gets the guy, maybe not the guy that she originally wanted, but John is in a league all his own. Part human, incubus, caster all rolled into a bad boy the girls go gaga for. *sigh*

I don’t get to model all that often, but I had to share this pic.  It’s not very often that I have a tee that showcases my love of books, but I got this keeper at comicon last year (yay for free stuff!!!)

P.S. I also loved how I put my Classical Studies training to use in this series by reading and understanding the Casts in their original Latin, yay for Latin Learners!! Caster Chronicles you get brownie points, and everyone loves brownies.
